Subject: Hull Secure Dramatic Premier League Promotion
Hull City have been promoted to the Premier League but Peterborough and Wolves drop down to League One after a thrilling finish to the Championship season. Steve Bruce's Hull knew they would return to the top-flight after a three-year absence if they matched or bettered third placed Watford's result. They managed to do that - Watford losing 2-1 to Leeds United and Hull drawing 2-all with Cardiff - although it was not straightforward. Hull had trailed to a goal by Fraizer Campbell. Nick Proschwitz and Paul McShane put the home side ahead -- before Proschwitz had a late penalty saved. Cardiff immediately went down to the other end and made it 2-2 through Nicky Maynard's penalty. At the time, 10-man Watford were 1-1 with Leeds and would have gone up with a winner - in a game delayed by 15 minutes. But Ross McCormack's injury-time lob gave Leeds a 2-1 win. "I have been around the block and this was woderful entertainment, but Jesus Christ, it's put us through the ringer," said Bruce. "I have said for weeks there would be twists and turns, but I have never experienced anything like the last 10 or 15 minutes. It took guts for us. Overall we deserved it" At the other end, Peterborough were relegated after conceding an injury time goal in a 3-2 defeat at Crystal Palace and Wolves also went down following a 2-0 defeat at Brighton. Brighton and Palace join Watford in the play-offs, along with Leicester, who sneaked into 6th with a 3-2 win at Nottingham Forest. |
